Now, one thing about the 2003 anime that a lot of people forget when comparing it is, generally speaking, it’s a lot more subtle than Mangahood is, both with its themes and with its foreshadowing and backstory. She takes on Trisha’s appearance, and has some of her memories - and like the other homunculi, she gains more and more back as she eats more of the Red Stones. In her case, she was created by the protagonists themselves, Edward and Alphonse Elric, in their attempt to revive their mother Trisha. Sloth, like all homunculi in 2003, was the result of a failed human transmutation. Because Sloth? Her entire motivation as a character is about that. Why? Because Sloth’s arc is the best rebuttal of the idea that the writers of the 2003 anime weren’t concerned with the issue of female agency. Whatever the reason, it’s a real shame, because Sloth desperately needs to be discussed more. Is it because she’s a villain, and more straightforwardly “evil” and, thus, less likable than someone like Lust? Is it because she’s 2003-only, and fans of the manga who analyze the female characters in each version tend to focus more on the characters they already like who are in both? Unfortunately, the fanbase doesn’t talk much about her, and as someone who finds her more and more fascinating on each rewatch, I’m not sure why. Sloth was a male character in the manga (although his introduction had not been written yet), but she was a woman in 2003 anime. ![]() Thus, the obvious place to start is where the 2003 anime created female representation where the manga didn’t have them. ![]() You can read all the entries here.Ī major point of this series is to disprove the notion from certain Mangahood*-only fans that the 2003 anime doesn’t care about its female characters, and that it refuses to give them compelling arcs in favor of focusing on male characters. The first in a series of feminist-minded analyses of the major female characters in the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the anime’s premiere.
